Evening Routines
What is an evening routine, why are they important, and how do you create the perfect personalised routine?
What is an Evening Routine?
Here at 60 Second Switch, we define an evening routine as:
'A set of activities performed in a specific order, in a set time-frame every evening'
Possessing a successful evening routine is an essential cornerstone of personal growth, improvement, and well-being.
From winding down after a long day, to setting yourself up for success in the morning. An evening routine empowers you to end your day on a high note and wake up feeling refreshed and energised for the day ahead.
It's a chance to reflect, recharge, and refocus, ensuring that you make the most of your precious time and continue your journey towards becoming the best version of yourself.
A successful evening routine varies drastically from person to person. Sadly, there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution, but if you can successfully place yourself into 1 of the 3 evening routine personalities below you will be well on the way to creating that perfect routine.

Take a few minutes to decide your personality:
Now that you know which personality you have. Let's look at why an evening routine is important for you.
Why is Your Evening Routine Important?
The Crammer:
You're regularly racing against the clock, juggling deadlines and navigating through a sea of pressure, you understand the value of every spare minute. Amidst this chaos, it's easy to overlook the significance of an evening routine—a small investment of time that yields exponential rewards, which even help you beat those deadlines in the long-run.
The negative effects of a poor evening routine on you is relentless. Without an evening routine, you find yourself tumbling into bed each night, your mind still buzzing with unfinished tasks and looming deadlines. The lack of a structured routine leaves you feeling unable to truly unwind, perpetuating a cycle of stress and sleeplessness. Your productivity suffers, your energy levels plummet, and your sense of control over your life diminishes.

But it doesn't have to be this way. By carving out just a sliver of your evening you can transform your routine from a chaotic scramble, to one of calm and improvement. Imagine slipping into bed each night feeling calm and centered, your mind clear and your body relaxed. That shouldn't be rare, that should be every night.

The benefits of a successful evening routine don't stop there. With a successful evening routine in place, you gain a precious opportunity to prioritise your well-being and set yourself up for success. By engaging in activities that promote relaxation and reflection, such as meditation and journaling you can soothe your frazzled nerves and cultivate a sense of inner peace. Additionally, by taking a few moments to review your goals, prioritise tasks, and plan for the day ahead, you can experience the many rewarding ways in which evening routines effect you every morning.
The Improver:
For someone as dedicated to self-improvement as you are, an evening routine isn't just a mundane checklist. It's a cornerstone of your journey towards becoming the best version of yourself. However, it's crucial to recognise the negative impacts of not having a structured evening routine can have on your self-improvement efforts.

Without a deliberate routine in place, you might find yourself drifting through your evenings without direction or purpose, squandering valuable time that could be invested in your personal growth. This lack of structure may cause you to struggle in maintaining consistency in your self-improvement practices. Inconsistent efforts can undermine your progress and erode your motivation, making it difficult to achieve the meaningful, lasting change you desire.

On the other hand, a successful evening routine holds the potential to accelerate your self-improvement journey, propelling you towards your goals with purpose and intention. By carving out dedicated time each evening for activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, you create a fertile environment for growth and development.

Furthermore, a successful evening routine can help you cultivate habits that support your self-improvement goals, such as prioritising sleep, practicing gratitude, and fostering a positive mindset.
By consistently engaging in these practices, you create a solid foundation for sustainable growth and lasting change. For you, the Improver, it is essential to remember the developmental impact that evening routines have on your life. They are, as you will learn, essential.
The Recharger:
If you're a Recharger, then you often find yourself feeling drained and depleted, struggling to muster the energy to tackle each day's challenges. Without a structured evening routine in place, you may inadvertently be sabotaging your depleted energy levels, hampering your productivity, and diminishing your quality of life.

Without a successful evening routine, you may find it difficult to disconnect from the demands of the day, leaving you mentally and emotionally exhausted well into the evening. The lack of boundaries between work and leisure time can blur the lines, leading to heightened stress levels, poor sleep quality, and a perpetual sense of burnout.

The negative effects of a poor evening routine result in a lack of energy. This energy drain ripples through every aspect of your life, hindering your performance at work, straining your relationships, and eroding your overall well-being.

However, by implementing a successful evening routine focused on recharging and preparation, you can break free from this cycle of exhaustion and unlock a newfound sense of vitality and resilience. Imagine ending each day feeling calm, centered, and fully replenished, ready to greet the morning with enthusiasm and vigor.
By intentionally disconnecting from the stressors of the day, you create space for your mind and body to unwind, allowing you to enter a state of deep relaxation and restoration. Moreover, a successful evening routine enables you to proactively prepare for the day ahead, setting yourself up for success and minimising the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed or depleted.

As you consistently implement your evening routine, you'll begin to notice a remarkable shift in your energy levels and overall well-being. With each passing day, your reserves of energy and resilience will grow, enabling you to tackle challenges with renewed enthusiasm, and live your life to its fullest!

1. Determine a Time-Frame
Determining a successful time-frame for your evening routine is much like laying the foundations for your house. If it is not thoughtful and personalised to the land on which it is built, it will harm your house further down the line.
To find the right time-frame for your evening routine, experiment with different periods between 5 minutes to 2 hours before bed. Start by establishing a baseline time-frame based on your evening routine personality.

Notice how you feel during and after each session, considering your energy levels and mood. Adjust based on your schedule and preferred evening routine activities. Pay attention to your body's signals, adapting as needed. Ultimately, personalise your routine to suit you, your lifestyle, and your goals.
2. Determine Rewards Wanted from Your Routine
When determining the rewards you want from your evening routine consider a range of rewards, ranking them from core (essential rewards) to outer rewards (additional rewards). Reflect on your goals, focusing on areas like personal growth, mental clarity, and relaxation.
Choose activities that align with these aims, balancing productivity with rejuvenation. Regularly reassess and adjust to stay on track with your evolving needs. This ensures your routine enhances your well-being and leaves you refreshed for the day ahead, while still focusing on improvement.
3. List Core Evening Routine Activities
Core evening routine activities are must-complete activities every night, they are never missed. When choosing core evening routine activities, select those that align with your wanted core rewards, such as self-improvement or relaxation. Limit yourself to a maximum of three activities for focus and feasibility. Select activities such as meditation for mental clarity, exercise for physical rejuvenation, or reading for relaxation.
4. List Outer Evening Routine Activities
Outer evening routine activities are additional activities that assist you in driving more rewards from your evening routine. When choosing outer activities for your evening routine, align them with your desired outer rewards. Initially, determine a few activities before gradually building that number up. Focus on quality over quantity, ensuring each activity contributes to your routine.
Base your outer activity load on your evening routine personality. For example, if you're an Improver you will enjoy building more activities into your routine, however if you're a Crammer you might want to stick to a few high-quality activities. As you grow comfortable, gradually add more activities and adjust based on their impact. This approach allows for a tailored and sustainable routine to maximise benefits. Remember that these are outer activities, so if they are impacting the execution of your core activities don't be afraid to drop a few.
5. Order Routine Activities into Time-Frame
Finally, when planning your evening routine, prioritise your core activities, assigning them specific time slots within your time-frame. Then, carefully integrate your outer activities around these, ensuring that they don't impede your core activities. Consider energy levels and giving for transitions in-between activities for a smooth flow. Prioritise tasks based on importance and aim for a balanced mix. A successful evening routine isn't a sprint, it's a marathon, so constantly tailor your routine to maximise its effects.
